The Outcome of Discouragement

How we respond to disappointment shapes how we experience God’s faithfulness.

Psalm 40:1-3

Discouragement is a common problem. As we saw yesterday, it may start with a divided mind but can easily turn into blaming others and giving way to anger. Sadly, its effects don’t stop there.

When disappointments pile up without resolution, our relationships suffer. If we see the one who disappointed us as the source of all our troubles, we may distance ourselves or even end the relationship altogether. Unresolved disappointment can also damage our sense of self-worth over time.

The most serious consequence is spiritual drift (Heb. 2:1). When discouragement takes hold, the Lord can seem distant or uncaring, not because He’s withdrawn but because we’ve built walls around ourselves. Then things that were once cornerstones of our faith—worship, Bible study, prayer—can easily fall by the wayside.

Don’t allow disappointments to build up and take such a toll on your life. Psalm 40:2 offers a beautiful reminder that the heavenly Father can lift you out of difficult places and set your feet on solid ground. When you’re feeling discouraged, turn to the Lord—He is the one who can put a new song in your mouth, a song of praise to Him (v. 3). Let your struggle become an opportunity to experience His faithfulness in a deeper way.
