The Reward of the Believer

Our prize isn’t something we earn through performance—it’s the joy of living a life rooted in Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:4-15

Paul wrote to a divided church. The Corinthians were lining up behind their favorite teachers (saying, “I follow Paul” or “I follow Apollos”) as if the gospel belonged to one personality or another (1 Cor. 3:4 NIV). Paul gently corrected them, using an agricultural metaphor to explain how the work of the kingdom is done: Paul planted and Apollos watered, but it was God who gave the growth. In other words, the workers are nothing on their own. Christ is the foundation, and every faithful life is built on Him.

Out of that conversation comes one of Scripture’s most striking images. Paul says each of us is building something with the opportunities God gives us, and the quality of that work will one day be revealed by fire. Some of it will prove to be gold, silver, and precious stones. Some of it will turn out to be straw. The fire isn’t there to punish; it’s there to reveal.

That’s a hopeful picture, not a fearful one. It means the small, hidden, faithful things—prayers no other person heard, kindnesses no one noticed—aren’t lost; they endure (Matt. 6:3-4).

The believer’s reward isn’t a prize earned through performance. It’s the joy of seeing that a life offered to Christ in any form was never wasted. Whatever you’re building today, build it on Him. He is the sure foundation.
